چکیده

Mineralogic, chemical, and oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions of 15 different phyllosilicate samples from Permo– Pennsylvanian-age paleosols of the eastern shelf of the Midland basin of Texas and the southern Anadarko basin are presented. Mixtures of 2 :1 phyllosilicates and kaolinite dominate most samples, although some samples consist of relatively pure 2 :1 phyllosilicates. Chemical and mineralogic data are used in conjunction with published thermodynamic data to calculate hydrogen and oxygen isotope fractionation factors for each sample. In turn, application of measured oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions of the phyllosilicates to temperature-dependent fractionation equations are used to calculate paleotemperatures of crystallization. The dD values of the phyllosilicates range from 69x to 55x. The dO values range from 19.5x to 22.7x. If these samples preserve a record of equilibrium with paleo-meteoric waters, the isotopic compositions of the phyllosilicates correspond to paleotemperatures of phyllosilicate crystallization ranging from 22F3 8C to 35F3 8C. In particular, the stratigraphic trend of calculated temperatures from Midland basin samples suggests that Early Permian surface temperatures may have been up to 10 8C warmer than those of the latest Pennsylvanian. Shifts in late Paleozoic atmospheric circulation over western equatorial Pangea: Insights from pedogenic mineral d18O compositions

The d18O values of pedogenic calcites, phyllosilicates, and iron (oxyhydr)oxides from fossil soils throughout the southwestern United States show systematic paleolatitudinal and temporal trends that indicate a significant change in soil moisture conditions and atmospheric circulation patterns over southwestern Euramerica throughout latest Pennsylvanian and Early Permian time. A progressive depl...

Noble gases and stable isotopes in a shallow aquifer in southern Michigan: Implications for noble gas paleotemperature reconstructions for cool climates

[1] Noble gas data from the Glacial Drift, the shallowest aquifer in southern Michigan confirm findings by Ma et al. (2004) that modern noble gas temperatures (NGTs) are systematically below the current mean annual air temperature (MAAT) which, in turn, is similar to the ground temperature of these recharge waters. By tracking noble gas concentrations as well as stable isotope ratios through an...

Oxygen and Carbon Isotope Variations in a Modern Rodent Community – Implications for Palaeoenvironmental Reconstructions

BACKGROUND The oxygen (δ(18)O) and carbon (δ(13)C) isotope compositions of bioapatite from skeletal remains of fossil mammals are well-established proxies for the reconstruction of palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic conditions. Stable isotope studies of modern analogues are an important prerequisite for such reconstructions from fossil mammal remains. While numerous studies have investigate...

Goethite, calcite, and organic matter from Permian and Triassic soils: Carbon isotopes and CO2 concentrations

Pedogenic goethites in each of two Early Permian paleosols appear to record mixing of two isotopically distinct CO2 components—atmospheric CO2 and CO2 from in situ oxidation of organic matter. The C values measured for the Fe(CO3)OH component in solid solution in these Permian goethites are 13.5‰ for the Lower Leonardian ( 283 Ma BP) paleosol (MCGoeth) and 13.9‰ for the Upper Leonardian ( 270 M...

Isotope composition and volume of Earth's early oceans.

Oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions of Earth's seawater are controlled by volatile fluxes among mantle, lithospheric (oceanic and continental crust), and atmospheric reservoirs. Throughout geologic time the oxygen mass budget was likely conserved within these Earth system reservoirs, but hydrogen's was not, as it can escape to space. Isotopic properties of serpentine from the approximately...
